5 Questions To Ask Your Contractor
When hiring a Contractor it is important to recognize there are several factors you should consider. We have added questions you should ask before you sign a contract.
1. Where is the Company based?
If there is not a verifiable local address you potentially are working with someone just driving through the area. Working with someone local provides you with the assurance you will be able to contact them should any issues arise.
2. Is the Company insured?
You may request a Certificate of Insurance before work starts on your project. Once received you should verify with the Insurance Company providing the Certificate to ensure the validity of the document.
3. What is “Scope Creep” and how should I handle it?
When a project starts, it is with a defined “Scope”, which states what work is included in the project. Unfortunately, some projects once started, may expose conditions that will negatively impact the Scope and are not evident in the initial inspection of the site. Before any additional work is begun, it is critical to obtain in writing the additional work needed AND the cost of the additional work. Be sure to have the Contractor show you the problem and do not be afraid to obtain a second opinion if you question the authenticity of the need for the added work.
4. How will you clean up at the end of the project?
We will make sure all waste materials are removed from your site and all grading is performed to remove low spots for proper drainage.
5. Is there a warranty for your service or for the materials you’ll be using?
All projects have a one-year warranty for labor and defective materials unless otherwise stated.
